Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas everyone!

A mediaeval nativity scene. I love the baby Jesus stroking the animals, Mary looking suitably exhausted and the helpful angel filling a bath. The artist must have had great fun painting this!

  1. Merry Christmas to you too! I've been going through the posts on the left and I have a question about Socrates. You mentioned the out of the blue (to me at least) scientific correctness that Socrates had about clouds, is this ever mentioned anywhere else? As far as his trial and conviction, it sounds like someone had it out for him personally.

    1. It's never been clear why Socrates was executed. The background is important: Athens had just been disastrously defeated by Sparta and an oligarchic government.nicknamed the "30 Tyrants" had been imposed, who conducted a ruthless purge of their opponents. Then there was a revolution and the democracy was restored. It was then that Socrates was tried and executed, possibly because he had been too friendly with the oligarchs. Socrates was the only prominent person to suffer. Why him? Historians have never agreed on this.

  2. Posts on the right! British are so confusing, driving on the left, posting on the right.
